People in modern society consult an astrologer before starting anything new. It may be laying of the foundation of a new house or shifting to a new house, starting of new work, a marriage in family, a journey to a distant place. Sometimes it is called superstition but others emphasise that in nature there are days & times when one is likely to succeed better.

In the “Brahmavarchas’ Panchaang” it is said,

“Yadmastang goto bhanugodhulya puritang namoh,

Sarvamangol karyeshu godhulih shaswate sadah”.

The the above shloka means –

“The time when the sun is setting and the cows are returning home is auspicious for all good deed”.

A perfect authentic almanac consists of five elements – Tithi, Days of the Week(Vara), Nakshatra, Yoga & Karana. Therefore it is called ‘panchang’. These are various auspicious & inauspicious muhurtas noted down in an almanac. In the ‘Vedanga Jyotish’ there are so many rules, sub-rules, mythological constraints with which it becomes almost impossible to calculate auspicious muhurtas of all times.

Hora – Each of the equal division of one rashi (30⁰ is called ‘Hora’)

First 15⁰ of Masculine Sign (Visham Rashi) is Hora of the Sun.

First 15⁰ of Feminine Sign (Sam Rashi) is Hora of the Moon.

Masculine sign – Mesh, Mithun, Simha, Tula, Dhanu, Kumbha

Feminine sign – Vrisha, Karkat, Kanya, Vrischik, Makar, Meen

Again, one day & night is completed in 24 hours which is called ‘Ahoratri’. The term ‘Hora’ is compiled with ‘Ho’ of ‘Aho and ‘Ra’ of ‘Ratri’, i.e. Ho+ Ra.

Basically, every hour counted from the sunrise times everyday, at a particular place is called ‘Hora’ in Sanskrit.

According to ‘Muhurtashastra’ while calculating auspicious & inauspicious hora there are some index of time which is given bellow:

1 Ahoratri = 24 hours = 60 Ghati

1 hour = 2 Ghati = 60 minutes

1 Ghati = 60 Pal = 24 minutes = 1 Danda

1 Pal = 60 Bipal = 24 Seconds

1 Bipal = 0.4 Seconds

2 ½ Bipal = 1 Second

48 minutes = 1 muhurtas

30 muhurta = 1 day (15 muhurta)+(15 muhurta)

29 32/62 muhurta = 1 Lunar day (Chandra Din)

For Muhurtashastra it is also explained that –

Akshay Tritiya (The 3rd day of the brighter half of Baishakh)

Akshay Navami (The 9th day of the brighter half of Kartik)

Basant Panchami (The 5th day of the brighter half of Magha)

Ganga Dashera (The 10th day of the brighter half of Jaishtha)

Vijaya Dashami (The 10th day of the brighter half of Ashwin)

Mahashivratri (The 14th day of the darker half of Phagun)

Ramnavami (The 9th day of the brighter half of Chaitra)

all the fullmoon days are auspicious for marriages, other new activities &
rituals.

It is also belived that all activities conducted in places of pilgrimage need no special day or time. The purpose of the activity is important where success follows automatically.
